Types of HIV HIV-1 and HIV-2
Both types are transmitted by sexual contact, through blood, & from mother to child, & they appear to cause clinically indistinguishable AIDS. However, it seems that HIV-2 is less easily transmitted, & the period between initial infection & illness is longer in the case of HIV-2. Worldwide, the predominant virus is HIV-1, & generally when people refer to HIV without specifying the type of virus they will be referring to HIV-1. The relatively uncommon HIV-2 type is concentrated in West Africa and is rarely found elsewhere.

How does the HIV test work?
The most commonly used test is an HIV antibody test. Antibodies are produced by the body in response to the presence of HIV, & this test looks for those antibodies. Most HIV tests involve taking a blood sample. Many clinics do offer anonymous HIV testing. It is important to get tested at a clinic that provides counselling, because counsellors can help you understand what your test results mean, answer questions on how to protect yourself & others, & refer you to local HIV related information resources. If you are concerned about the HIV test or thinking about being tested then you call the Terrence Higgins Trust Helpline, THT Link or you can call direct on 08451 221 200, For young persons 13 to 16 you can call Child line on 0800 1111 for more information & support. HIGH FLIGHT
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of
wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air,
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. |

When I Die, Give What's Left Of Me Away, To Children, And Old Men That Wait To Die,
And If You Must Cry, Cry For Your Brother Walking The Streets Beside You. And When You Need Me,
Put Your Arms Around Anyone, And Give Them What You Need To Give Me.
I Want To Leave You Something. Something Better Than Words Or Sounds.
Look For Me In The People I've Known Or Loved, And If You Cannot Give Me Away,
At Least Let Me Live In Your Eyes And Not In Your Mind. You Can Love Me Most,
By Letting Hands Touch Hands, By Letting Bodies Touch Bodies,
And By Letting Go Of Children That Need To Be Free. Love Doesn't Die - People Do.
So When All That's Left Of Me Is Love, Give Me Away. |

What is HIV?
HIV is short for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV attacks the body's defence system (called the immune system) making it harder to fight off infections. If someone has the HIV virus in their body they are described as being HIV positive. To begin with, a person who is HIV positive may Not have any symptoms & may not know they have been infected with the virus. However, at some point, the body will start to need help from anti-HIV drugs to keep the person well |

What is AIDS?
AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. When a person's immune system can no longer cope, because it has been damaged by HIV, he or she is more likely to get illnesses, especially infections and cancers, many of which would not normally be a threat. When someone gets to this point, they might be said to have AIDS. However, it is not a term used widely anymore. Doctors may instead call this "late stage" or "advanced HIV infection". (People do not actually die from AIDS) They die from the cancers or other illnesses that their immune system no longer has the strength to fight. |

What does 'infected with the HIV virus' mean?
If a person is "infected with the HIV virus" it means that the virus has got into their bloodstream. They may be well & feel healthy for a very long time without having to take any medicine. If they know they are"infected with the HIV virus" they will probably go to a doctor every few months for blood tests to have there Viral loads checked. (Link about viral loads to be added) If they do start to become unwell because of the HIV or if the blood tests show their immune system is getting weaker, they will probably start to take anti-HIV medicine.
For someone to become infected, a sufficient amount of HIV must get into his or her blood. The body fluids that contain enough HIV to infect someone are: blood, semen, vaginal fluids including menstrual fluids, and breast milk. |

Different ways that the HIV virus can infect you
The main routes of infection in the UK are: Through sex without a condom HIV can pass from one person to another through unprotected anal or vaginal sex. Through the use of injecting drugs HIV can be passed on by using needles or syringes that someone with HIV has already used. (allso Hep B more about this with Links later) From mother to baby a pregnant woman with HIV could transmit the virus to her baby before or during birth, or HIV can be passed on during breastfeeding. Through organ transplant, blood transfusion or blood products from someone with HIV before it was known that donated blood might contain HIV, many people with haemophilia became infected through receiving contaminated blood products. However since 1985, all blood & tissue donations & blood products in the UK have been screened for HIV. |

What are the meany myths surrounding the HIV infection?
Some people think that having sex creates HIV or that it is only from gay sex this is not true. For HIV to be passed on during sex, one person has to already have the HIV virus.
People can be confused & scared about how HIV is passed on. Remember that saliva, sweat and urine do not contain enough of the virus to infect someone. HIV cannot pass through the air like a cold or flu virus. So, you can't get HIV through: coughing, sneezing, sharing a toilet seat, swimming pools, tears, sharing cups, glasses or cutlery, touching, sharing someone home who is HIV positive, or by being bitten by mosquitoes, or donating blood as a new needle is used for every donor. |

How does the HIV test work?
The most commonly used test is an HIV antibody test. Antibodies are produced by the body in response to the presence of HIV, & this test looks for those antibodies. Most HIV tests involve taking a blood sample. Many clinics do offer anonymous HIV testing. You don't have to give any one you speak to your name & you can ask them anything you want to know about HIV or sexual health. |

Can HIV be cured?
No not present, there is no vaccine or cure for HIV.At the moment however, anti HIV drugs are available, & taking a combination of anti-HIV drugs can slow down the damaging effect of HIV on the immune system. (This dose Not meen you will have to take them straight away it can be some years befor you may need them ) However, they do not completely clear the HIV from the body. There is still no vaccine to stop people becoming infected with HIV - but using condoms is a good way of protecting yourself if you are having sex. |
Can you tell if someone is HIV positive?
No people that are HIV positive can look & feel healthy for years, so it is unlikely you would know that someone is HIV positive - they may not even know themselves. The only really reliable way is by having a HIV test to check the blood for the virus. |
What is safe sex?
Safer sex means to use condoms or Femidoms the female condom. And the use of lubricant if needed when having anel or vaginal sex. As well as preventing the HIV virus from passing from person to person, safer sex will protect against most of the other sexually transmitted diseases & also to help stop pregnancy as condoms are not 100%.
Remember it is illegal to have sex if you are under the age of 16 years old, (And for any one to have sex with any one else that is also under 16) But it is not illegal for you to find out more about safer sex so the more you Learn when young will only help you stay well & safe when you are old enuth & when you are ready to start haveing sex. |

If you are HIV Positive & have a sexual partener that is also HIV Positive it is still importont that you still use condoms to protect each other as you can still infect each other with a difarent strains of the virus.
